My professional life began at the American Chamber of Commerce Rio de Janeiro, as Development Manager responsible for new associations and to promote network between American and local companies. Then over 20 years of experience in Communication and Marketing fields, eight of them in the energy and petroleum segment, in the areas of marketing, communication and public affairs, in large international companies– as Praxair and Repsol YPF, respectively. Responsible for the conduction of actions and implementation of projects to support business in a socially responsible and ethical manner, protecting the environment and benefiting the communities. Besides other sports and cultural sponsorships, aiming to improve and strength the company’s image in the market. Experience in public relations, crisis management and press advisory for support in branding activities. 14 years working in the security field as Director at A.L.A.R.M . Mr. Gertner's presentation will focus on Israel's perspective of counter terrorism. He will describe the Israeli Police, our special units in the fight against terror, our prevention circles, and some of the lessons learned from terror attacks during the last few years.
Retired Colonel, Ron Gertner, has held many positions in the Israel Police since 1992. His positions over the 25 year span included: Assistant to the head of civil security of HodHasharon and Kfar Saba (1992-1993); Intelligence Officer of Kfar Saba Police Station (1993-1995); Commander of Policemen Instruction Course Section (1995-1996); Deputy Commander of the Taibe Police Station (1996-1998); Deputy Commander of the Netanya Police Station (1998-2001); Commander of the Rosh Haayin Police Station (2001-2003); Chief of Operation of the Sharon Sub-District (2003-2004); Netanya Police Commander (2004-2009); Chief Instructor and Deputy Commander of the Police Academy (2009-2011); Commander of the Eilat Sub-district (2011-2013); Israel National Defense College (2013-2014) and Chief of Operations of the Samaria and Judea District (2014-2016).
Before retiring, as Chief of Operations of the Samaria and Judea District, Colonel Gertner commanded more than 200 officers including the Central command post and the district anti-terrorism SWAT unit. The District suffered from more than 150 terrorist attacks of various kinds and he coordinated all agencies within the District to work together to prevent future terror attacks. As a Commander of the Eilat Sub-district, he had to cope with external security threats with the assistance of the relevant defense authorities. The District dealt with border infiltrators and worked according to a new mapping and enforcement model against companies and businesses found in violations of the law.

It is projected that by 2021, 100 million international tourists will visit the United States, adding an expected $250 billion to the economy each year. Add to that all the money spent by Americans traveling within the country, and it is easy to see why tourism is such a vital and valuable industry. It is, however, also an industry particularly vulnerable to the impact of natural and man-made disasters and events, especially when they are repetitive and highly publicized in the media.
Negative impacts of crises and their effects on tourists’ perceptions of destinations are exacerbated by today’s digital-age communication challenges, such as the speed of information dissemination, the multinational scope of communication, the influence of the Internet on public opinion, the pervasiveness of the media both online and off, and the public’s dependence on social media for news and information.
At the same time, law enforcement is under the media microscope in a growing number of crisis situations, including civil unrest in major cities, mass shootings, terrorist attacks, severe weather deaths and damage, and crime waves.
In large-scale crises, such as these, there actually is a natural symbiotic relationship between law enforcement and the tourism industry in terms of crisis management, communication and media relations, but all too often that relationship is not recognized in time, if at all. This is a missed opportunity.
This 45-minute PowerPoint presentation will explain why a coordinated Crisis Management Plan between law enforcement and tourism sectors is vital, and how such a plan can foster a relationship that will work to their mutual benefit and that of the public. In particular, what the roles and contributions of each party should be in fostering public perceptions of safety and restoration of normalcy, as well as managing tourism aspects, such as evacuations and travel restrictions.
The presentation will also explore what a Crisis Management Plan needs to include, and how it can be used to better manage media and public attention in our digital, social media world.
Carole Gorney is the Senior Security Analyst for Gannett Fleming Security and Safety Team and Senior Vice President of the Cline Group. She is a graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University, and received her Masters in Harvard/MIT Conflict Resolution Training Program. She also served as a National Director for the Public Relations Society of America from 2000 to 2001, in addition to serving as Director of the Marketing Committee for the DaVinci Science Center from 2006 to 2010. She is also an author of many books, including “Principles of Risk and Crisis Communication,” U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Facilitators Manual and Participant Textbook, “Keeping the Media Neutral in a Crisis,” and “Practical PR Techniques.” She also was on the Board of Directors for National Alcoholic Beverage Control Association.

He is also the medical director of the CHI-St. Joseph Manor Nursing Home/ Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing Facility. He is also helps a local high school as a team physician. Jessica Lani Rich is the President and CEO of The Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii (VASH) and has served as President for the past 13 years.
Ms. Rich is also a TV Host on KWHE-TV in Honolulu, Hawaii. VASH is a non-profit organization that assists visitors who are victims of crimes or other adversities in Hawaii. The agency assists approximately 2,000 visitors in crisis every year. During her years at the Visitor Aloha Society, Ms. Rich has assisted hundreds of visitors in distress. Ms. Rich also serves on the national Board of Directors for Travelers Aid International in Washington, D.C.
Ms. Rich received her Bachelor’s Degree in Communications from San Francisco State University and completed graduate work toward her M.A. Degree at the University of Hawaii. She is a Certified Critical Incident Specialist and was trained in Baltimore, Maryland at the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation. She is also a Stephen Minister for First Presbyterian Church at Koolau. She is a former News and Public Service Director for KUMU Radio, where she hosted her own radio show. Ms. Rich is also the author of the book “The Gift of Hawaii, Island Inspirations.”

Dr. Peter E. Tarlow is a world-renowned speaker and expert specializing in the impact of crime and terrorism in the tourism industry, event and tourism risk management, and economic development. Since 1990, Tarlow has been teaching courses on tourism, crime and terrorism to police forces and security and tourism professionals throughout the world.
Tarlow earned his Ph.D. in sociology from Texas A&M University. He also holds degrees in History, Spanish and Hebrew Literature, and Psychotherapy. In 1996, Tarlow became Hoover Dam's consultant for tourism development and security. In 1998, Tarlow's role at the Bureau of Reclamation expanded. He was asked to develop a tourism security program for all Bureau of Reclamation properties and visitor's centers. In 1999, United States Customs Service asked Tarlow to work with its agents in the area of customer service, cultural awareness, and custom's impact within the tourism and visitor industry.
In 2000, Tarlow, due to inter-agency cooperation on the part of the Bureau of Reclamation, helped to prepare security and FBI agents for the Salt Lake City 2002 Winter Olympic Games. He also lectured for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games. Tarlow has worked with police departments from the state of Rio de Janeiro for the 2014 World Cup Games and 2016 Olympic Games.
Tarlow is a founder and president of Tourism & More Inc. (T&M). He is a past president of the Texas Chapter of the Travel and Tourism Research Association (TTRA). Tarlow is a member of the International Editorial Boards of "Turizam" published in Zagreb, Croatia, "Anatolia: International Journal of Tourism and Hospitality Research," published in Turkey, "Turismo: Visão e Ação" published in Brazil, and "Estudios y Perspectivas en Turismo," published in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Stacey graduated from UCLA. She spent over two decades in broadcast journalism. She spent 10 years as a reporter at KVBC-TV (NBC Las Vegas) and has lived in Southern Nevada since 1997.
As a Stage 3 melanoma survivor, Stacey is on a mission to save lives by educating others about skin cancer. She’s on the Board of Directors for the Nevada Cancer Coalition. She travels to Washington D.C. to lobby on behalf of the American Cancer Society's Cancer Action Network (ACSCAN). She volunteers as media chair for ACSCAN. When the Nevada Legislature is in session she promotes the importance of keeping cancer in the spotlight. In 2013, her testimony was pivotal in passing Senate Bill 267 which prohibits anyone under 18 from using tanning beds.
In July 2014, she was invited by the U.S. Acting Surgeon General to participate in a call to action focused on skin cancer prevention and education. Stacey shared her survivor story at The National Press Club and her story was featured on NBC Nightly News, on NBC affiliates around the country, on the Associated Press wire and in hundreds of newspapers across the United States from Alaska to Florida, and in both Europe and Asia.
An inspired speaker and author, Stacey’s passion and informed perspective make her a sought-after lecturer on health and wellness, oncology from a patient’s viewpoint, and prevention and education at medical conferences. She also teaches breakout sessions on how to develop relationships with the media and delivering a clear message.
Stacey believes her most important job is raising her two kids. Stacey loves to run. She has completed seven marathons and several RAGNAR road and trail relays.

Raymond P. Suppe is the vice president of customer safety for the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA). He is responsible for the safety and security of the 3.2 million square foot Las Vegas Convention Center and its sister venue, Cashman Center, consisting of 100,000 square feet of exhibit space and a 9,200-seat outdoor sports stadium.
He joined Security of the LVCVA in October 1992, held various staff and management positions within the department, and was promoted to Director of Security in 2005 and Senior Director of Security in 2014. Suppe oversees the operating functions and professional conduct and training programs for over 200 employees within Customer Safety’s three sections of Security, Traffic and Fire Prevention. He is also responsible for one sub-section – Safety.
Suppe serves as the liaison between the LVCVA and related public agencies such as the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, FBI, Clark County Fire Department, and Department of Homeland Security.
Prior to joining the LVCVA, Suppe served in the United States Army. His current affiliations include President of the International Tourism Safety Association, Executive Board Secretary for the Las Vegas Security Chiefs’ Association, and member of the American Society of Industrial Security (ASIS) and the International Association of Venue Managers (IAVM).
